From the preface:

Thisbook is both an introductory textbook and a research monographonmodelling the statistical structure of natural images. In verysimpleterms, ``natural images'' are photographs of the typicalenvironmentwhere we live. In this book, their statistical structure isdescribedusing a number of statistical models whose parameters areestimatedfrom image samples.

Our main motivation for exploringnatural image statistics iscomputational modelling of biological visualsystems. A theoreticalframework which is gaining more and more supportconsiders theproperties of the visual system to be reflections of thestatisticalstructure of natural images, because of evolutionaryadaptationprocesses. Another motivation for natural image statisticsresearchis in computer science and engineering, where it helps indevelopmentof better image processing and computer vision methods.

Thebook is targeted for advanced undergraduate students, graduatestudentsand researchers in vision science, computationalneuroscience, computervision and image processing. It can also beread as an introduction tothe area by people with a background inmathematical disciplines(mathematics, statistics, theoreticalphysics).Due to themultidisciplinary nature of the subject, the book has beenwritten so asto be accessible to an audience coming from verydifferent backgroundssuch as psychology, computer science, electricalengineering, neurobiology, mathematics, statistics andphysics.
